The first Aussie panel van or P-van was the FJ Holden released in 1953 –twenty years before they became popular in the early 1970’s. It provided young people freedom and accommodation amongst other things in a conservative society. Holden’s Sandman is the best known, the Ford Sundowner and Chrysler Drifter were part of surf culture at the time.
